Management at The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet

The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is the country’s largest institution for music and the dramatic arts, and shall present operas, ballets and concerts of the highest artistic quality. The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet consists of the companies the Norwegian National Ballet and the Norwegian National Opera, in addition to the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra, the Norwegian National Opera Chorus, the Norwegian National Opera Children’s Chorus and the Norwegian National Ballet School. 

The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is led by General Director Nils Are Karstad Lysø and a management team consisting of the opera director, ballet director, music director, staff director, marketing and communications director and technical director. The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet shall present operas, ballets and concerts of the highest artistic quality, within a broad stylistic range and accessible to the broadest possible audience. As the only national institution within its art forms, the organisation also contributes to the further development of creative and producing opera and ballet activities across the country. The Chairman of the Board of The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is Anne Carine Tanum, and the board is composed of representatives appointed by the Ministry of Culture.

Finance

The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is currently the country’s largest cultural institution in terms of budget and number of employees. The company’s total revenues comprised NOK 580 million in 2010 and NOK 636 million in 2011. In practice, financing is obtained from three sources – the state (approx. 75%), the public (approx. 15%) and commercial/other income (approx. 10%).

The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet is directed by its vision and values, and has formulated a common standpoint through its philosophy. The philosophy describes what the organisation wishes to achieve, and also expresses something about who The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet wish to be in relation to the surroundings.

As the only national institution within its art forms, The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet also contributes to the further development of creative and producing opera and ballet activities across the country. The institution is organised as a limited company and is wholly-owned by the Norwegian state.

The Board of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet

The board members are appointed by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. Anne Carine Tanum has been the Chairperson of the Board of Directors since May 2015. The staff representatives on the Board are elected by the staff.
