The Children's Chorus

About the children's chorus

The Norwegian National Opera Children’s Chorus at The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet was established in the spring of 2002, and participates in ordinary opera and ballet productions as well as special performances. The chorus consists of around 70 children, both boys and girls, who have passed extensive entry auditions.

The chorus is divided into groups for those who are 6-10 years and 10-17 years. The children receive weekly tuition in singing, drama and movement from professional teachers.

The chorus has participated in several of the Opera Company’s productions in the Main House, including Tosca, Den fjerde nattevakt, La bohème, The Magic Flute, Othello, Der Rosenkavalier, Macbeth, Hansel and Gretel, Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci and Carmen. In recent years, the Norwegian National Opera Children’s Chorus has also presented a range of family performances, including Brundibar, The Great Bank Robbery, Vi lager opera, Pollicino, Forhekset - med tryllestav i operaen, Cinderella, Der Jasager, and Lillebror og Knerten, where the children have held the central roles.

Admission

The Norwegian National Opera Children’s Chorus offers membership in the country’s largest institution for music and the dramatic arts, and artistic challenges through participation in larger and smaller opera productions, dedicated chorus concerts and concerts together with the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra and other participants. Members of the chorus receive instruction in singing, drama and movement.

Everyone who applies for admission to the Norwegian National Opera Children’s Chorus at The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet must pass an audition, which aims to form a picture of the child’s musical and dramatic capabilities and ability to take part in the chorus’ activities. Auditions for admission to the Norwegian National Opera Children’s Chorus are held each year.

In 2014, auditions took place in weeks 20 and 21. The audition consists of a prepared, self-chosen song, to be performed without instrumental accompaniment, as well as individual listening and drama exercises.
