Jazz at the Opera: Tord Gustavsen
Oslo Jazz Festival 2014 will open at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet on Monday the 11th of August 2014. The featured artist of the concert is the Norwegian composer and pianist Tord Gustavsen.
The music expands from warm soundscapes of the highly acclaimed Tord Gustavsen Trio to newly commissioned works introducing the young talented singer Synne Sanden. The ensemble also gives room for distinct musical voices, like trumpeter Arve Henriksen and others (to be announced). Gustavsen's musical universe can be recognized as both familiar and brand new, and points to chamber jazz, lyric minimalism, strong melodies, subtle grooves and abstract gospel.
Tord Gustavsen was born in Oslo in 1970 and has a long career in Norwegian Jazz. He won the Norwegian Grammy in 2009 and is critically acclaimed internationally for his records and concerts. Gustavsen is also a much sought after accompanist, working with singers like Kristin Asbjørnsen, Susanna Wallumrød, Silje Nergaard and Solveig Slettahjell.
Tord Gustavsen has released five albums on the German record label ECM and in January 2014 the new record Extended Circle will complete a double trilogy containing trio and ensemble-editions.
At the age of 23, Synne Sanden is a new and exciting name for the Oslo Jazz Festival’s audience, although she performed at the festival with the group Chili Vanilla in 2010 as part of the showcase-program. After receiving good reviews for her melancholic debutalbum When Nobody’s Around produced by Bugge Wesseltoft, she made a U-turn with Climbing The Rainbow in 2013. Her passionate pop music is flying high and low, soft and strong, honest and with no compromise. Synne has also worked together with Thomas Dybdahl and Susanna Wallumrød as guest vocalists.
