Oslo Jazz Festival 2017 welcomes you to this year’s opening concert at The Norwegian Opera and Ballet on Saturday August 12th with Manu Katché & friends: Tore Brunborg, Ellen Andrea Wang, Mathias Eick, Bugge Wesseltoft, Trygve Seim, Jacob Young & Petter Wettre.
Since the 80s the French drummer has been in high demand among some of the world’s greatest artists. The classically trained drummer was integral to both Sting’s ‘An Englishman in New York’ and Peter Gabriel’s ‘Sledgehammer’ – two massive hits and great songs. But jazz, which he was introduced to as a youngster by his stepfather, is closest to his heart and the genre of choice for his own bands. In these bands he often prefers to include Norwegian jazz musicians.
– The whole thing started with Garbarek, and through him I got in touch with a very special circle of musicians. Not only are they technically fabulous musicians, but they have a unique tone. They have something that I feel very much at home with, said Katché in an interview with Norwegian newspaper Bergens Tidende in advance of his concert at Vossa Jazz in 2015.
Tore Brunborg, Ellen Andrea Wang, Mathias Eick, Bugge Wesseltoft, Trygve Seim, Jacob Young and Petter Wettre are all key players in the Norwegian jazz scene. They’ve all made an impact both on a national level and internationally and represents some of the best music Norway has to offer.
