Leyna Magbutay

Intro

Since joining the Norwegian National Ballet in 2007, Leyna Magbutay has danced principal roles such as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and the Sugar Plum Fairy and Clara in The Nutcracker. In Autumn 2015 she made her debut in the role of Giselle in Cynthia Harvey's production of Giselle. She has also danced roles such as Myrtha in Giselle, the Queen of the Dryads in Don Quixote, The Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and the pas de trois in Swan Lake. Most recently she has danced the roles of Michaela and Frasquita in Liam Scarlett's new production of Carmen, and the roles of Dolly and Betsy in Christian Spuck's Anna Karenina.

Magbutay has danced leading roles in various neoclassical and modern ballets, most notably in the Kylián repertoire, including ballets such as Bella Figura, Petite Mort, Falling Angels, Wings of Wax, Symphony of Psalms and Sechs Tänze. She has also danced the 4th movement principal in Balanchine's Symphony in C, as well as in Agon and Theme and Variations, Forsythe's The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude and Enemy in The Figure, Duato's Por Vos Muero, Without Words, and Multiplicity – Forms of Silence and Emptiness, Leon & Lightfoot's Safe As Houses, Ekman's A Swan Lake, as well as Tetley's Ricercare and Sacre du Printemps. She has also been part of various creations for the company by choreographers such as Wheeldon, Dawson, Elo and Lee.

Originally from Japan, Magbutay began her training with Ana Keates and at the Tokyo Ballet School, before moving to the UK and for her full time education at Elmhurst School for Dance. In her final years as a student, she danced with the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
