Catholic mass in opera form
The Verdi Requiem is one of the most magnificent works in the orchestral repertoire. Expect drama and thunderbolts as the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the Norwegian National Opera Chorus and soloists from the Norwegian National Opera come together to perform it.
While the Requiem is based on the Catholic funeral mass, it also bears the stamp of Verdi's operatic background, from lyrical solo parts to gigantic fugues and colossal outbursts. It's like an operatic version of the Catholic mass, or "opera for the concert hall", as it is also known.
It was first performed in 1874 in memory of Italian author Alessandro Manzoni, and remains one of the most beloved and emotive pieces of its kind.
A production like this requires input from an orchestra, choir and soloists. Here the Norwegian Radio Orchestra join with the Norwegian National Opera Chorus and Norwegian National Opera soloists Marita Sølberg, Tone Kummervold, Marius Roth Christensen and Jens-Erik Aasbø.
