A delightful comic opera about unpolished, true love

Mozart’s ‘The School for Lovers’ should be obligatory for all those who desire an instruction manual for a happy relationship.

Two sisters allow themselves to be seduced by the lover of the other – in disguise. Before too long, these four young people discover that everything they believed to be true and eternal is ever changing.

There is much pain in this comic opera about four individuals who briefly swap partners. Yet they all enjoy the game of seducing and being seduced. And perhaps they might very well be happy with the other person – if not happier?

We are invited to an intricate swingers’ party, where we ultimately learn that anyone can take the place of a lover.

Modern love

Così fan tutte offers a different and more cynical look at love than we normally associate with opera. It is an eerily relevant work at a time when romances are initiated – and broken – with the help of orchestrations and algorithms on Tinder and Match.com.

Così fan tutte shows us how to dismantle love – and put it back together again.

A school to love

Così fan tutte was Mozart’s final collaboration with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, a duo that was to change opera history forever and were behind such successes as Figaro’s Wedding and Don Giovanni

‘School works’ were extremely popular in Vienna in the 1780s. Emperor Joseph II is said to have encouraged da Ponte to write the piece The School for Lovers, which in turn inspired Così fan tutte, which literally means ‘women are like that’: seize a new opportunity the moment it presents itself.

But this is something of which not only women, but all of us are guilty.
