Kylián in three acts

One of a Kind presents a rare opportunity to enjoy an entire evening of ballet with the master of all masters, Jiří Kylián. Is there room for the individual in a group and who are we when alone?

A person rises from the theatre and balances over a jagged bridge in the middle of the stage floor. She is alone, she is brilliant, she is here to stay. While other men and woman, dancers and a cello player enter the stage, each with his or her own individuality and expression, she remains in place – even during the intermission – until the very end of the performance.

Celebration of equality

“How can an individual exist in a group of other individuals?” That is the question that Jiří Kylián explores in One of a Kind.

We are in Kylián’s universe. In One of a Kind, he gives us poetic, hypnotising dance that triggers emotions and reflection. Is there room for the individual in the multitude of the masses? But at the same time: Who are we without others?

This is explored in distinctive, variable scenery created by architect Atsushi Kitagawara as if, oddly enough, he knew which venues would be performing his creation 21 years later. During the opening, it is almost as if we are entering an interpretation of the marble house interior.

Dancing the individual

It has been said that Kylián’s choreography is equivalent to dancing the individual. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this performance.

Kylián is considered one of the world’s most important choreographers, who has repeatedly revived ballet as an art form. The Norwegian National Ballet’s all-night performance of his One of a Kind is also a celebration of the unique individual that Kylián is, not to mention the close collaboration that has developed over 30 years between him and the company.

Saturdance 25. April

At Saturdance events you can see excerpts from ballets about to première, and meet dancers, choreographers and Ballet Director Ingrid Lorentzen. The events provide an opportunity to get up close and personal with the dance and are free and open to everyone. And who knows, perhaps the youngest audience members will also have a chance to test out the dance floor afterwards? The events are held in the foyer.

There are no Saturdance events prior to repeat performances.
