Oslo Jazzfestival: Jan Garbarek Group
Feat. Trilok Gurtu.
Oslo Jazz Festival is proud to present Jan Garbarek Group featuring Trilok Gurtu as the opening concert at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet marking our 30th anniversary in 2016.
Jan Garbarek has, since he won a national competition for jazz amateurs in 1962 at the age of 15, established himself as one of our biggest international stars. He has been a great source of inspiration for a number of musicians worldwide and has an impressive track record as a composer and musician.
When receiving the Norwegian Cultural Council’s Honorary Award in 2004 these lines followed:"Garbarek has been an important gateway for the interest Norwegian jazz has internationally today. His open musical universe has made the audience curious about the new Norwegian improvisational music."
Garbarek played at festivals in Warsaw and Prague with Karin Krogh as far back as in 1966. With his own quartet consisting of Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen, they recorded and toured clubs and jazz festivals. He also worked with the American jazz musician George Russell who stated that Garbarek was "the largest European-style creator since Django Reinhardt".
Good memories from the seventies include Garbarek working with Norwegian poet Jan Erik Vold, his quartet with Bobo Stensson, Palle Danielson and Jon Christensen and the quartet with Keith Jarrett. Later musical collaborations included Charlie Haden, Eberhard Weber and Agnes Buen Garnås. Garbarek has in the last 20 years focused mainly on the The Hillard Ensemble and his own band.
Jan Garbarek has never been at a standstill musically, but the "Garbarek sound" is easily recognizable no matter what musical context he explores. He has listened to and been inspired by the greatest jazz, classical and folk music from various regions of the world and constantly worked purposefully with his own expression.
For the first time at Oslo Jazz Festival presenting his new concert repertoire, we welcome: Jan Garbarek, Rainer Brüninghaus, Yuri Daniel and Trilok Gurtu.
