Manon

Magnificent classical ballet by Sir Kenneth Macmillan

Completed

Intro

Would you choose love or a life in prosperity? This is the choice facing Manon in the ballet with the same name. The performance offers steps and lifts that will take your breath away, accompanied by Jules Massenet’s music.

Poverty and luxury

When Manon and Des Grieux meet in 18th century France and fall deeply in love, Manon’s brother Lescaut is in the process of offering her to the highest bidder. The lovers flee, but Lescaut follows with Monsieur G.M., who offers Manon a life in luxury as his mistress – and she accepts. She cannot, however, give Des Grieux up, and they together attempt to cheat Monsieur G.M. of his money. The plot is discovered, and Manon is convicted of prostitution and deported to New Orleans. And this is not the end. That comes later with shame, love and death in the marshes of Louisiana.

It’s probably not surprising that ever since the publication of Abbé Prévost’s novel L’Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut in 1731 that people have been fascinated by the story of Manon, and that it has formed the basis for several operas and ballets. Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s version of 1974 was met by critical reviews: Wasn’t it the case that the heroine here was amoral? What was it exactly that motivated her?

MacMillan replied that the answer lay in poverty: “Manon is not as afraid of being poor as she is ashamed of being poor,” he said, himself a man from a poor background who became possibly the most influential choreographer of his time. Both public and critics eventually came to love Manon, and it now has a given place in the repertoire of ballet companies all over the world.

Revamping a classic

When the Norwegian National Ballet staged the first Norwegian production of Manon in 2015, it marked the unveiling of a visual masterpiece. The Opera House workshops revamped this classical ballet, providing new set designs and costumes. “John-Kristian Alsaker's set design is simple but effective, and Ingrid Nylander's 18th Century-inspired costumes are a sight to behold,” wrote the critic for daily newspaper Dagsavisen, who also enjoyed the musical interpretation: “It's a treat to hear the Norwegian National Opera Orchestra perform Jules Massenet's music.”

This year, dancers from the Norwegian National Ballet and the Opera Orchestra will once again tell Manon's story, which features one of the most beautiful and most demanding pas de deux ever created. The music is a wonderful collage of various musical pieces by Massenet, including his yearning ‘Elégie’, which is the musical theme for the lovers.

Among them are Des Grieux (a young student), the wealthy Monsieur G.M. and Lescaut, who is there to meet his sister Manon on her way to enter a convent. During the hustle and bustle of arrivals and introductions, a beggar steals a watch from Monsieur G.M. and celebrates gleefully before its loss is discovered and Lescaut has to intervene to save him from punishment. Soon afterwards, Manon arrives with an Old Gentleman who is obviously attracted to her. Lescaut notices the Old Gentleman's interest and takes him into the inn to come to an arrangement over Manon.Manon remains outside and meets Des Grieux. He is entranced by her. They fall in love and decide to escape to Paris with the help of the money that she has stolen from the Old Gentleman. Lescaut and the Old Gentleman come out of the inn, having made a bargain, and to their dismay see that Manon has disappeared.
