Kylian: Black & White

The Norwegian National Ballet at their best, performing works by Jiří Kylián

Intro

«He can tell an entire story through just a single movement.» Welcome to the world of Jiří Kylián, and to six ballets in black and white.

An excellent introduction for beginners

«For those curious about modern ballet, but who have not yet dared to attend a performance, this is an excellent introduction,» said the Dagbladet newspaper of the première in 2016, while Dance Europe called the evening a not-to-be-missed Kylián-feast.

The Norwegian National Ballet has a close relationship with legendary choreographer Jiří Kylián, who is widely regarded as having transformed the art of ballet – and as one of the most important dance artists of all time. The evening’s six, short ballets have been described as «dance which makes the audience rise in a jubilant standing ovation – and then sit down and start to think.»

From Webern to Mozart

A broad range of styles is offered here – from the sensual Sweet Dreams to the slapstick humour of Sechs Tänze. While eight female dancers perform a stylistic study in discipline to Steve Reich’s intense drum rhythms in Falling Angels, six male dancers perform a testosterone-drenched piece to the music of Bach in Sarabande. And whereas No More Play is a precise composition performed to Anton Webern’s disharmonies, the beautiful Petite Mort is performed to the undulating tones of Mozart.

Jiří Kylián turns 70 this year, and the Norwegian National Ballet is one of the companies selected to participate in the grand-scale production Celebrating Kylián. The company will therefore guest Kylián in his native city of The Hague as part of this programme.
