Il tabarro / Gianni Schicchi

Two short operas by Puccini in one evening: an intense thriller and a black comedy

Whilst Il Tabarro (The Cloak) is a compact thriller, Gianni Schicchi is a comedy about death. Experience both – with intense musical voices and beautiful arias, including “O mio babbino caro” – in one evening!

On a barge on the Seine, Giorgetta yearns for a better life. How does her older husband react when he discovers that she has begun a relationship with one of his young crew-members?

One man's loss is another man's gain! An old man sits in his wheelchair, at a decked out table, with his family around him. As he draws his last breath over a glass of wine, the gun goes off for what will be a wild search for the old man’s money. His will is to be found in the “fat monks’ hands” - but maybe the schemer Gianni Schicchi can strike whilst the iron is still hot.

Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi are two of the one-act operas which form Puccini’s trilogy Il Trittico, which premièred at the Metropolitan opera in 1819. You can experience the third piece, Suor Angelica in spring 2019. All three are produced by director, set and costume designer Isabella Bywater.

Il Tabarro (The Cloak)

Il Tabarro is set in Paris circa 1910 and opens with a musical depiction of the shadowy banks of the Seine in the twilight. Daily working life is represented by music reminiscent of popular melodies from the time, with drinking songs, a street organist and buskers.

On one of the cargo boats, we find Giorgetta  – a city girl who longs for the feel of asphalt under her feet and who grieves for her lost child. She is married to the older canal boat owner Michele, but she has fallen for one of his crew, Luigi. Michele becomes increasingly suspicious and forces Luigi to admit the relationship, before strangling him.

The title, Il Tabarro, refers to the cloak used by Michele both to warm the child they lost and then to hide the body of Luigi.

The opera is an adaptation of La Houppelande, a melodramatic piece by Didier Gold, which Puccini saw in Paris in 1912. Following Pietro Mascagni’s success with Cavalleria Rusticana in 1890, Puccini had considered writing a short contrasting opera to complement it. Il Tabarro became the melodramatic beginning ¬ a thriller and a family tragedy.

Gianni Schicchi

The family is also a central theme in Gianni Schicchi, but according to the composer himself, the aim of this was “to laugh and make others laugh as well”. The inspiration for Puccini’s only comic opera comes from a passage in Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.

When Buoso Donati dies, his family learns that the old man has donated his entire fortune to a monastery. They ask the cunning Gianni Schicchi if he could help them alter the will. Of course he can! But strangely enough, most of the inheritance then ends up in his hands and those of his daughter Lauretta, and with a grin, he reminds the enraged family of the ghastly punishment they face if the truth of their crimes ever surfaces.

Puccini masterfully uses a range of different musical expressions; from rapid and rhythmic during the comical description of the wrangling family, to the beautiful long lines in Lauretta’s famous aria “O mio babbino caro”, in which she asks her father for permission to marry her lover Rinuccio.
