The Royal Norwegian Navy Band: Bernstein 100 years
The Royal Norwegian Navy Band pays tribute to the celebrated composer
2018 marks the centenary of the birth of the American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein – definitely something worth celebrating! They are joined by soloists Eir Inderhaug and Thomas Ruud in a programme that shows off the breadth of Bernstein's musical universe. Music from West Side Story and Candide will obviously form part of the programme, but the concert also offers a rare chance to enjoy work such as Profanation, the second movement from Bernstein's Symphony no. 1.
The Royal Norwegian Navy Band, known popularly as the Navy Band, is one of five professional bands in the Norwegian Armed Forces. Based in Horten, the Navy Band has toured the USA, France, Russia, China and Spain – as well as fulfilling regular military and civilian engagements here in Norway. The Navy Band has also visited Afghanistan on several occasions, and has entertained Norwegian and foreign troops.
Eir Inderhaug is one of Norway's foremost singers, and has performed on opera stages across Europe. Since making her opera debut in 1999 at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, she has appeared on opera stages including the Bavarian State Opera, Theater Bremen, Komische Oper Berlin and the Gothenburg Opera. She also appears regularly with the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, most recently as the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute.
Since making his debut with the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet in 1994, Thomas Ruud has appeared regularly in roles including Don José in Carmen, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly and Rodolfo in La Bohème. He has also performed on several major opera stages, such as the Staatsoper Stuttgart and the Staatsoper Hannover. As one of three tenors who tours with Hanne Krogh on her Christmas Concert Tours, he is also well acquainted with Norway's churches.
The Navy Band has a reputation as one of Northern Europe's leading wind bands, and has worked with many prominent musicians in all kinds of genres over the years. The Navy Band's work with Erik Bye resulted in a CD, I Dur og Brott, which was awarded the Spellemannpris in 2003. In 2017 the YAM Awards named the Navy Band Best Large Ensemble for its school production of The Planets. The Royal Norwegian Navy Band's lead conductor, Bjarte Engeset, conducts the performance.
